Long Melford 'Big Night Out' Fireworks Future Hangs In The Balance

Long Melford 'Big Night Out' Fireworks Future Hangs In The Balance

In a disappointing turn of events, the highly anticipated Long Melford 'Big Night Out' fireworks event has been cancelled this year. Scheduled to take place in November, the event has been called off due to financial pressures, leaving many locals and fireworks enthusiasts saddened by the news.

Organised by Project Seven, the cancellation comes as a result of the organisation facing financial constraints and other demands, making it unfeasible to proceed with the event as planned.

In a statement, Project Seven expressed deep regret at having to make this decision, highlighting the challenging circumstances that led to the cancellation stating, "It is with regret that Project Seven must announce that there will not be a Big Night Out in 2024, due to financial pressures and other demands put on to us.

"The only way we can continue is by obtaining sponsorship.

"We will continue supporting local events with our food unit and are also actively looking for other events to expand this side of our fundraising.

"We rely on volunteers and are also seeking more willing hands to help at these events, and if you can help in any way, please get in touch with a committee member."

The future of the now event hangs in the balance. Without fresh funding, the beloved fireworks display, which has been a staple of the local community for over 50 years, faces an uncertain future.

Chair of Long Melford Parish Council, Elisabeth Malvisi, said: "It's a loss for the village and it is a big loss for everyone. It's an iconic event and it's very, very sad and I am sure at some stage I will be getting together with my other co-councillors to discuss it."

As well as being a vital opportunity for local charities to raise funds, The Big Night Out is also an important event in the calendar for local businesses as they benefit from passing trade and visitors to the village over the event weekend.

This isn't the first time the 'Big Night Out' event has faced obstacles. In 2022, the event was cancelled after the discovery of three suspected mortar bombs in the grounds of Melford Hall, its original location. Last year, it was relocated to Kentwell Hall Estate in Long Melford, providing a new setting for the festivities.

Despite the setbacks, the 'Big Night Out' has a long history of giving back to the community, having raised approximately £800,000 for local charities over the years. Its absence this year is sure to be felt by both attendees and the charitable causes it supported.

As the community comes to terms with this year's cancellation, hopes remain high for the return of the 'Big Night Out' fireworks event in the future, provided that the necessary support can be secured.
