Of course in the UK firecrackers are not legal for sale to the general public. If they were they would probably be the most popular form of firework going.

The idea with a roll of firecrackers is to roll them out. The clue is in the name. These guys or “hillbillies” to give them there proper name, decided to tape the roll together, thus reducing the overall duration and giving a more spectacular spectacle.

A man in Florida this week has been sent down (this is street slang for gone to prison) for storing 20,000 lbs of fireworks in his garage.

The judge gave him 40 years.

The 46 year old man was a convicted felon already with a history of firearm possession and machine gun possession, sure when you consider the dude owns a machine gun it doesn’t sound so bad, but remember we are talking about 9 tons of fireworks. That’s a lot of fireworks, or about $100,000 worth.

In one of the largest illegal fireworks seizures in the counties history, members of the Martin County Sheriffs Office teamed up with the tactical unit, SWAT team, Bomb Disposal Team and the special investigations section to search the mans house, in a scene reminiscent of a late 90’s Hollywood blockbuster.

At the time, authorities said it was one of the biggest seizures of illegal fireworks in county history. The investigation was started after the firework hoarder sold some illegally stored pyrotechnics to an undercover officer.

Some of the colourfully titled fireworks had public-scaring names such as “City crasher,” “Molotov cocktail” and “pyro protest,” always handy for attracting media attention to a story.

More than a thousand fireworks have been seized in County Fermanagh in the last 48 hours.

On Monday, police in Enniskillen seized rockets, bangers and other fireworks, including display ones.

On Tuesday night more than 600 fireworks, including 450 illegal Black Cat bangers were seized in Irvinestown.

Inspector Roy Robinson said: “Each year, fireworks injure numerous individuals and these finds are a positive result.

“In the wrong hands and used indiscriminately, these fireworks could undoubtedly have had the potential to cause serious injury,” he added.

“The illegal use of fireworks is not only a dangerous activity, but is a type of behaviour that causes nuisance and distress to many people in our community.”

MARTIN COUNTY — Tuesday was a bang-up day for bomb disposal specialists from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.

They disposed of 20,000 pounds of illegal fireworks at the department’s gun range property west of Palm City.

The cache was seized on July 2 after deputies served a search warrant on 46-year-old James Buhs’ home at 907 E. Ocean Blvd., Stuart.

Once inside, authorities found several weapons, a large stash of cash and approximately $100,000 worth of fireworks stacked floor-to-ceiling and more stored in an outside shed.

Sheriff’s bomb disposal team Detective Bill Jones said although Tuesday’s disposal went off as planned, fireworks disposal under any circumstances is a dicey proposition.

“It is one of the most dangerous tasks we undertake,” Jones said, adding he would much rather deal with a bomb than dispose of fireworks.

As part of their training, the department’s bomb technicians learn how to effectively and safely dispose of fireworks at the Hazardous Devices School at the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala.

And as one might imagine, there is more to dispatching 10 tons of fireworks than striking a match and running for cover.

“It’s a very detailed process,” Jones said.

Essentially, the idea is generate an intense, extremely hot fire that will consume both the fireworks canister and charge before it has a chance to detonate and “kickout,” he said.

“We had some kickout, but yesterday worked almost perfectly,” he said.

Jones also said a significant amount of pre-disposal planning was required. Because fireworks are deemed hazardous materials, an approved disposal plan must be permitted by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the entire affair coordinated with the fire department — just in case, he said.

While the bomb team has conducted about four fireworks disposals in the last 10 years, Jones said, Tuesday’s exercise was particularly memorable.

“In my 26 years of doing this, this was the largest cache of fireworks I’ve ever had to destroy,” he said.
