Burning of the Bulls, Tultepec, Mexico, videos
The city of Tultepec in Mexico has a very unusual way of celebrating their favourite saint. They strap a whole load of rockets and fireworks to large wooden bulls and the brave young men of the city dance around them as the rockets fly all over the place!
Tultepec is the Mexico’s home of fireworks, with more fireworks makers there than you can shake a rocket stick at with about 80% of the country’s fireworks produced there since the 18th century. San Juan de Dios is the patron saint of firework makers and a week long national pyrotechnic fair commemorates him. He is famed for rescuing patients from a burning hospital. Nowadays firework manufacturers pray to San Juan to protect their workshops and keep them safe from fire. The annual pyrotechnic fair was started in 1989 to safeguard the rich history and promote the skills of the pyrotechnicians of Mexico.
Firework “Castillo’s” or castles are fashioned in the shape of bulls and other animals in light wood. These are then covered with paper and decorated and painted. They are completely covered in fireworks and rockets and the young daredevils (madmen) jump around them and shout FIRE! FIRE! As they wear only hoods and thick jumpers to protect themselves. The bravest men will stand next to the bulls for as long as they can, it is a matter of pride to stand right next to the exploding structures. Needless to say there are often injuries and minor burns are very common serious burns, sadly are also rather common.
It’s a bit ironic that to honour the saint who saved patients from his hospital, saved them from burning, the locals burn themselves. Surely San Juan de Dios did not like people burning? Or else he would not have saved them? This is the way of traditions however and logic is not always required.
Check the videos, say wow at the madness you see there and please please do not try any of this at home.

Apologies for the quality of the video but do not worry, this is the first of many and we will be filming plenty more before the year is out.
All comments and questions are very welcome. Do let us know what you think of this rocket and tell us what would be your perfect firework. Who knows, if we like it we may even make it and name it after you!!

Celestial Fireworks by NASA
Last Friday saw two U.S spaceships crashing into a crater on the moon, on purpose.
NASA scientists are trying to discover if there is water on the moon. By bombarding it with their spacecraft.
It is still to early to tell whether or not the mission searching for ice on the moon was successful.
The plan was to crash the Centaur Rocket spacecraft into the lunar surface and attempt to set off fireworks that are big enough to be seen by telescopes here on earth.
Sadly, the big display was a failure, and left masses of people disappointed as they crowded outside the Ames Research Center in San Jose, California, and many more who were watching it on NASA TV.
David Morrision, the head of the Lunar Solar Institute said, “we all expected to see something.”
The science director at Ames Reseach Center, Mike Bicay, said an infrared camera on the second spacecraft spotted changes in temperature as it came closer to the moon. Bicay reckons that this could suggest water was being forced through the plumes caused by the rocket crashing. “Until all the facts are in, I’m going to remain cautiously optimistic.” Said Bicay.
So, no actual moon fireworks to speak of just yet, but a hopeful outlook for water on the moon.
Of course, the discovery of water on the moon would be more than just a scientific breakthrough. It would back up NASA’s long term plan of a Lunar Waterpark complete with flumes and a wave machine. It is hoped that the wave machine will work naturally, just like the waves on earths oceans which are powered by the gravitational pull of the moon which of course fits in with their carbon neutral policies.
It is not yet clear whether the inclusion of a diving area will be given the go ahead amid fears of anyone getting too much lift on the springy diving boards could, in theory, jettison off into space. The debate continues.

It Works! Underwater Rocket, Scientific Proof
Here it is folks. the undisputable scientifically proven evidence that you have all been waiting – at least a minute since you read the title of this post – to hear.
Take one firework rocket. Stick it in a bottle of water. Light the fuse. You are now a scientist. It really is that easy. This video shows the BBC’s “Bang goes the Theory” with one of their hip young presenters teaching a group of children how to play with fireworks scientifically. You see the ke word here is science. If you get bunch of kids to watch you light fireworks in a public park under normal conditions, it could be that you find yourself in a wee bit of bother. Get the word “science” in there however, and you quickly become a respectable scientist who is bettering mankind, by getting a bunch of kids to watch you light fireworks in a public park.
We love science here at Epic Fireworks. Without science there would be no fireworks, just people mindlessly blowing up chemicals to create colourful and noisy light shows in the sky, and that wouldn’t do at all.
Science, we salute you.
